A piece of cake!

Fruit cake is one of my weaknesses.
One of my endearing childhood memories is of my mother's fruit cake. Plump, moist, fruity, lovely (this is the cake I'm talking about: my mum isn't plump). Whenever she visits, she brings a cake with her.
But we don't see her that often (she lives a long way away), so I asked her for the recipe. I've never been one for baking, but - strongly motivated - I had a go. It was OK; the second attempt was pretty good; these days, still pretty good.
But mine are not as good as my mum's. She's had decades of practice, and it shows. Her fruit cakes are almost always a 10, very occasionally a 9. Mine are mostly 7.5 with hints of 8.5 on a good day. Good, but not as good as they could be.
Here at Manchester Printers we quite often see other print material by other suppliers that fall into the "good, but not as good as they could be" category. That said, we sometimes see printed work for which a "5" would be generous. Unlike the cake, though, we can make a 5 or a 7.5 into a 10. We've been doing that for decades.
